Youth and Social Media II

· Read 04/27/21

  • He really wants to be in dialogue with prior sociological research, defining terms and then throwing a curveball

Ch. 3 - Code Switching

  • Tension between street cred and institutional cred

    • Same for Pastor
  • Context collapse has more at stake for the stigmatized
  • Whereas prior work suggested that black youth have to choose between street and decent, Lane's work suggests that there's not a clear choice point

Ch. 4 - Pastor

  • Whole chapter on one person, high stakes
  • Non sequiturs to get youth to accidentally reveal info
  • "Machismo, futile" comment from public defender
  • Claiming intimacy and distance at the same time

    • Intimacy for authority, distance re: couldn't have done anything to connect Canada and Pastor
  • What would it look like done better? Writing? Methods?
  • If you're going to write about a group of people, should they be your audience? Should your work be accessible to them?

    • Reciprocity, accountability
  • Do other people need to read this book?
  • Teach a man to fish: uplift the subjects so they can tell them themselves

    • But it's not the work of social science
  • Feedback loop should be considered in methods
  • Much more unease in reading this book this year than when it was assigned in previous years

Methods

  • Qual top down common in communications
  • Qual bottom up common in CMS

    • E.g. "I want to write about QAnon and families," go in and explore and start making sense of it
    • "Grounded theory"
  • Walkthrough method: qual content analysis with STS flavor
  • Theory

    • Example: parasocial relationships
    • Try to apply it and see if it fits
    • Ground up: those in new domains often have to do
    • But also we don't have to come up with new branded terms and concepts for everything
    • Grad student once asked TL "who do you use?" "I use whoever I need"
  • Follow-up: can you tell which method (top down or bottom up) a person used? Should we be able to?
